I adore Kerry Greenwood’s books, especially her Corinna Chapman series. So the first book of the month will be a series, with the first book being called Earthly Delights.
Corinna is a baker and reluctant investigator. She owns a bakery called Earthly Delights underneath her apartment in a Roman building called Insula. Earthly Delights and her apartment are the core settings in the series but the whole Insula building also plays a big role as does various other places in Melbourne. The inhabitants of the other Insula apartments also add a lot of character to the stories which characters such as Meroe who is a witch, Mrs Dawson the retired socialite, The Professor who is both the expert on the Romans and a cheeky old man, Jason, a 15 year old boy who Corinna’s apprentice and recovered heroin addict and of course Corinna’s handsome lover Daniel.
Corinna herself is a delight. A divorced fat woman in her 30’s who has given up accounting to become a baker; Corinna doesn’t mince words, has an open mind for new experiences and fills the books with sarcastic wit.
I have lost count of how many times I have read these books and will read them many more times no doubt. There are currently 6 books in the series and I am hoping to see some more in the future. The current books in order are:
- Earthly Delights
- Heavenly Pleasures
- Devil’s Food
- Trick Or Treat
- Forbidden Fruit
- Cooking The Books
